Hong Kong Underwater Photo and Video Competition 2019

Aim
Hong Kong Underwater Photo and Video Competition 2019 is co-organised by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) and Hong Kong Underwater Association (HKUA) with a view to promoting the beauty of underwater marine life and habitats in Hong Kong; and raising public awareness of importance in conservation of our marine environment in Hong Kong.

Groups
1. Open Group – Digital Photo Competition (including two categories Macro & Close-up, Standard & Wide Angle), and Digital Video Competition
2. Student Group – Digital Photo Competition
Contestants can only participate in one Group.

Eligibility and Entry Requirement
Valid certified divers and aged 15 or above for contestant to any Group. Contestant to Student Group must be full-time students. All entries should show marine ecology, habitats or marine life in Hong Kong waters. Digital photo should be taken in Hong Kong waters within the designated period from 17 September 2018 to 30 September 2019, while digital video should be taken in Hong Kong waters from 17 September 2017 to 30 September 2019. Entries must be the original personal photography of contestants; and prior to the submission, were not for sale, published and involved in any other competition. The contestants shall not in any forms disclose his/her identity on the entries. People being involved in organising of the competition are not allowed to join the competition.

Open Group - Digital Photo Competition
Open Group – Digital Photo Competition (Digital Photo Competition is divided into two categories : (I) Macro & Close-up; (II) Standard & Wide Angle)
Entry Guidelines
iContestants should be enrolled as individual. Each contestant may submit up to 10 photos for each category.
iEntries should be original photographs. The resolution of the file submitted should not be higher than 1600x1200 (4:3) or 1800x1200 (3:2). Except for minor adjustments such as full-frame optimization of white balance, brightness, contrast, colour saturation, sharpening and cropping, no manipulation is allowed, for example, synthetic modification or colour-change by computer post-processing.
iOnce the entries are selected, the original untouch file of the entries and a file with minor modification (for exhibition purpose) must be provided by the contestants in JPEG/RAW/TIFF format, resolution of which should not be less than 3200x2400 (4:3) or 3600x2400 (3:2). The minor modification is defined as no more than 10% optimization of color, exposure and/or cropping.
iContestants are reminded to pre-set the date of the camera before shooting.

Open Group – Digital Video Competition
Entry Guidelines
iContestants can be enrolled either as individual or in teams. Contestants could submit no more than three entries for video competition.
iEntries must be in 720i Standard-definition (SD) resolution or above. Edited video clip should not be longer than 1 min. Video entries should be in H.264/MPEG-4 format.
iAccompanying music, if included in the video, should be royalty free and not infringe on any copyright.
iVideo editing will be allowed. However, computer graphic and animation should be minimized. At least 75% of the video should be taken place in the water.

Student Group – Digital Photo Competition
No categories, other requirement the same as for Open Group – Digital Photo Competition

The organisers have the right to disqualify the entries that do not meet the above rules and regulations for the competition. Organisers also reserve the right to timely amend the rules and regulations of the competition without prior notice to the contestant.

Judging Criteria
Digital Photo: all entries will be scored by the judges on the basis of the shooting difficulty, the overall beauty and the expression of the message.
Digital Video: all entries will be scored by the judges on the basis of the theme, the creativity, the technical skill (visual impact, editing, background music), the expression of the message and the overall performance.

Entries Submission
Method 1: Visit “Hong Kong Underwater Photo and Video Competition 2019 – Enrolment Page” to fill in entry form, upload diving certificate, student card (only applicable to Student Group) and entry.

Method 2: Submit entry in CD or DVD together with their duly completed entry form and photocopy of the diving certificate and student card (only applicable to Student Group) to Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (Marine Conservation Division/East, 7/F Cheung Sha Wan Government Offices, 303 Cheung Sha Wan Road, Kowloon) or Hong Kong Underwater Association (Room 1012, Sport House, 1 Stadium Path, So Kon Po, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong) by mail or in person on or before the date of deadline. Once submitted, no entries in the form of file, CD or DVD will be returned to the contestant.

Method 3: Entries may also be submitted together with the electronic copy of the duly completed entry form, diving certificate and student card (only applicable to Student Group) by email at mar_con_east@afcd.gov.hk or enquiry@hkua.org.hk. Video entry must be provided with a hyperlink to download the video. Acknowledgement e-mail will be sent to the contestants for successful submission.

Prizes
Open group
Champion, First Runner-up and Second Runner-up in all categories under Digital Photo Competition and in Digital Video Competition. In addition, Outstanding Award will be given in each category of Digital Photo Competition. Up to three Special Prize for Junior Underwater Photographer will be given in all categories under Digital Photo Competition and in Digital Video Competition for outstanding entries taken by the contestants who have not received any awards from underwater photo or video competitions in Hong Kong or overseas. The prizes include trophy or certificate.

Student Group
Up to three special prizes will be given to full time students participating in the Digital Photo Competition. The prizes include trophy or certificate.

Hong Kong Underwater Association will select a best underwater photographer and a best underwater videographer among all winning entries. He or she will
be eligible to represent Hong Kong to enter oversea competitions (The organisers reserve the right to make the final decision).

Each winner will be noticed for the award on or before 8 November 2019. Champion of each category may be invited to introduce their awarded entries and share their tips in taking the photography in the prize presentation ceremony and the subsequent public seminars or sharing session introducing marine ecology of Hong Kong. The winning entries will be displayed for educational purpose as well.

Copyright
Contestants shall comply with the relevant Copyright Law. Entries in violation of copyright or related offenses, including but not limiting to being borrowed, reproduced, copied and counterfeit, will be disqualified. The offender shall bear their own legal liability. Any legal disputes are not related to the organisers.

The organisers reserve the rights including but not limiting to exhibit, publicly display, distribute, reproduce, edit, print and publish the entries without prior notice to the contestant. No fees will be payable for any of the above uses.

Once the entries have been submitted for the competition, the contestant is assumed to recognise and agree the items stated in this brochure.

Underwater Photography Student Workshop

Aim
To encourage more students to appreciate and conserve the beautiful marine environment in Hong Kong, and to enhance the photography skill and environmental awareness of potential participants to Student Group, AFCD is organising the Underwater Photography Student Workshop, which includes lecture, underwater photography practical section and closing ceremony.

Target
Certified diver aged 15 or above, full time student with at least 20 dive logs.

Workshop Content
Understand and appreciate Hong Kong’s marine ecology and marine life, introduction to underwater photography equipment, skill of underwater photography, underwater photography ethic and safety measures.

Instructor
ShuShuRicky is a guest instructor at Eco Institute and is an underwater photographer based in Hong Kong. He has won more than 10 local and international photography awards. He is a keen diver, currently the PADI IDC Staff Instructor and is the founder of a local dive club. He has been photographing underwater in Hong Kong and overseas and is invited speaker in many events to share underwater photography and the beauty of marine life.

Underwater Photography practical session and Closing Ceremony

*Participants need to bring their own underwater photography equipment. Organiser will provide dive gears, tanks, weight and weight belt. Participants must attend both lecture and practical session to qualify for receiving certificate of completion.

Underwater Digital Videography Workshop

Aim
To encourage more divers to appreciate and conserve the beautiful marine environment in Hong Kong, and to enhance the videography skill and environmental awareness of potential participants to the Hong Kong Underwater Photo and Video Competition 2019, The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department and the Hong Kong Underwater Association are organising the Underwater Videography Workshop, which includes lecture, underwater videography practical session, video production session and closing ceremony.

Target
Beginner to underwater videography, certified Open Water and Advanced Open Water diver (or equivalent qualifications), aged 15 or above, with at least 20 dive logs.

Workshop Content
Understand and appreciate Hong Kong’s marine ecology and marine life, introduction to underwater videography equipment, skill of underwater videography, technique in video processing, underwater ethic and safety measures.

Instructor
John Ng
Founder of Scuba Monster Underwater Photography & Diving Equipment and Nikon School underwater photography course instructor, John is full time underwater and wildlife photographer. His photography work has brought him to many countries worldwide and he has logged more than a thousand dives for underwater photography in Hong Kong. John has been interviewed by different local newspapers, magazines, TV programs, and he is invited speaker in different universities and institutes to share his experience in underwater photography.
