African Swine Fever

African Swine Fever (ASF) is a highly contagious disease in pigs which is caused by ASF double-stranded DNA virus. It is not a zoonotic disease and will not infect human, hence does not cause any food safety risk. However, ASF virus demonstrates extremely high potential of transboundary transmission and the mortality rate of pigs infected with ASF could reach 100%. In addition, currently there is neither vaccine nor drug available for prevention or treatment of ASF. Thus, ASF is severely threatening the pig farming sector and relevant industries anywhere as well as the overall live pig supply.

ASF virus possesses high survivability in blood, faeces and tissues of the infected pigs and can persist for a long time, especially in uncooked or undercooked pork products contaminated by ASF virus. Cold environment favours the survival of ASF virus for even longer. In order to prevent the incursion of ASF virus into local farms, the farmers must implement stringent biosecurity measures.
