Modernised Pond Fish Culture

To promote sustainable development of pond fish culture in Hong Kong, the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) has established a demonstration point at the Au Tau Fisheries Office in Yuen Long to showcase a container eco-culture system. A smart aquaculture management platform has also been introduced so as to promote the use of relevant technologies and provide support to the industry.

Container eco-culture system

The container eco-culture system is an eco-friendly aquaculture technology. Different from traditional pond fish farming, this system uses containers for modern and high-density culture while achieving ecological conservation and resources recycling.

Tailwater (i.e., water discharged from the containers) is released into the associated ecological ponds, where it undergoes sedimentation as well as biological absorption and degradation, promoting water purification and enabling resources recycling.  One of the key advantages of the system is that by planting various aquatic plants and crops in the ponds, and cultivating different detritivorous and filter-feeding aquatic animals (including fish and shrimp), it provides habitats for birds and other wetland organisms to forage and roost, thereby enhancing biodiversity of the area around the system.  The crops grown can also generate additional income.

Smart Aquaculture Platform
The system enables smart aquaculture management through the use of remote real-time water quality monitoring devices, auto-feeders, and aerators to collect and monitor aquaculture parameters and equipment operation, with data transmitted in real time via mobile networks to a central management platform, allowing 24-hour remote monitoring.
