Monkey-pod belongs to Mimosaceae, leaves bipinnate, petioles quadrangular. Its fruit (pod) forms an unique shape which is strongly curved or spirally twisted, looks like a ring hanging on the tree. The Chinese name of Monkey-pod means “Monkey earring” may suggest this distinctive feature.
