Kandelia obovata is the most widespread mangrove species in Hong Kong. It reproduces by vivipary, i.e. the hypocotyl starts to grow before the embryo detaches from the plant. The propagules (droppers) resemble pens hanging on tree branches, giving the plant a Chinese common name meaning 'water pen'. The early start of growth enables the dropper to sprout once it settles in a suitable environment.
