Controlled Environment Hydroponic Technology
-
The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) and the Vegetable Marketing Organization jointly established the Controlled Environmental Hydroponic Research and Development Centre (CEHRDC) in 2013. Through introduction and demonstration of advanced hydroponic technology and facilities to the industry and investors, the CEHDRC aims to enhance the technological level of the local vegetable production sector and bring new opportunities for agricultural development in Hong Kong. The CEHRDC arranges regular visits to different hydroponic farms to provide them technical support. The CEHRDC is also proactively engaged in research and development with a view to broadening the spectrum of local hydroponic vegetables and offering more choices to the market by selecting and cultivating new varieties.

Phase 2 of the CEHRDC came into operation in 2022. It aims to demonstrate the latest agricultural technologies to the industry and actively co-operate with local research institutes and tertiary institutions to facilitate knowledge transfer and technology development, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of the industry. To boost technology and knowledge transfer and attract the young generation to join the agricultural industry, the CEHRDC launched the Hydroponic Cultivation Pilot Attachment Programme. The programme provides professional knowledge in operating indoor controlled environment hydroponic farms and opportunities for hands-on experience to potential investors, start-up farmers or local tertiary students who are interested in joining the hydroponic agricultural sector.
