The Secretariat of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) issued a notification (CITES notification No. This link will open in a new window2024/043) on 11 March 2024 informing Parties the recommendation to suspend trade for commercial purposes in the below listed sharks and rays species exported from Ecuador or with country of origin as Ecuador. The suspension takes immediate effect and will remain in effect until further notice from the CITES Secretariat. This Department reminds traders not to arrange any import or export shipments of the aforementioned specimens. Shipments contravening the CITES trade suspension will be seized.

Shark and ray species (exported from Ecuador or with country of origin as Ecuador) affected by this CITES trade suspension includes:

Carcharhinus falciformis Silky shark
Carcharhinus longimanus Oceanic whitetip shark
Sphyrna lewini Scalloped hammerhead shark
Sphyrna mokarran Great hammerhead shark
Sphyrna zygaena Smooth hammerhead shark
Alopias spp. Thresher sharks
Cetorhinus maximus Basking shark
Carcharodon carcharias Great white shark
Isurus oxyrinchus Shortfin mako shark
Isurus paucus Longfin mako shark
Rhincodon typus Whale shark
Mobula spp. Manta or devil rays

The suspension takes immediate effect and will remain in effect until further notice from the CITES Secretariat. This Department reminds traders not to arrange any shipments of CITES-listed species from or to the aforementioned countries. Shipments contravening the CITES trade suspension will be seized.

The withdrawal takes immediate effect. This Department informs traders that shipments of CITES-listed species from or to Mexico can be resumed.
